A Funny Lesson in Obedience

No one has ever become poor by giving.

Tithing used to be a strange concept to me. Why would I give away my hard earned money to the church when I clearly needed it so much more? Not until a few years ago, when I actually heard sound teaching on this subject, did I commit to tithing to the church.  I'd be lying if I said it's always been 100% consistent, which brings me to what happened today.

This week has been a bit rough and set me back financially. Seeing as I got paid a few days ago, I was supposed to tithe this morning. As I thought about the amount I'd be giving (which is usually 10%), I began arguing with God and tried to justify possibly giving less, due to my circumstances. I wanted to only give half. Walking to the information desk at church I felt a little bad but thought "Hey! God understands, right?" I entered the amount into the debit machine and waited for the transaction to be approved. There were a couple of hiccups, however and it took me several tries to actually complete this transaction.

After leaving church I checked my phone only to see that my Scotiabank mobile app had texted me. This app is great because it sends me a text message every time my debit card is being used so that I know immediately if someone else uses it. It turns out that I did not only get one but two text messages for the same amount. The debit machine double charged me, which means I ended up giving the amount I should have given in the beginning!

For some reason I pictured God just sitting there and saying: "Uuuh, do you really think you can get out of giving me what is mine because you don't think you'll have enough? Okay, I'm going to take it anyway. You're an idiot. But I love you anyway."

It's ridiculous to think that after all this time of Him proving Himself to be faithful in all situations I would still somehow doubt His providence.

Luckily, His faithfulness isn't dependent on ours.
And His sense of humour never ceases to amaze me.
